European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
